The International Masters Award of Excellence, valued at $2,500 per semester, for up to five full-time semesters within the permitted program time limit (6 semesters), will be awarded to qualified international Masters students normally enrolling research graduates of the University of Waterloo Started on May 1, 2019 (2019 spring admissions cycle).
Based on the award amount allocated to the College, the College will recommend eligible students. Students will be selected based on their application for admission to the graduate program entry requirements, which must demonstrate academic achievement.

All applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for the 2022-23 IMAE Scholarship at the University of Waterloo, Canada
- International students who are enrolled full-time and paying international tuition fees and have a current Canadian study permit.
- Typically distributed to students on research-based courses (thesis or major research paper).
- Usually only offered to students starting the first term of the program (Semester 1.0).
- Students must meet the College’s set of standards of academic excellence.
- There must be no outstanding probationary admission requirements, and students must meet the program’s academic progress requirements.
- This grant may be offered in addition to other internal or external scholarships (e.g., Washington University Graduate Fellowship, OGS, etc.). Note that scholarships are different from sponsorships; see bullets below.
- The general rule states that students should not concurrently receive funding from foreign governments or institutions (such as the China Scholarship Council or the Libyan government), nor should they be fully or partially self-sufficient beyond the minimum level required by the faculty.
- Grandparent students under the current IMSA program cannot be nominated for IMAE, but students who have already obtained IMSA and successfully completed a master’s degree can.
- Students are automatically awarded this award based on their application for admission. Internal procedures for selection of recipients by departments and/or faculties based on eligibility requirements and assignments are defined by them.
- Departments may set stricter eligibility requirements when necessary.
