The Columbia Law School Scholarship is designed to assist the Columbia University LL.M. Candidates who have demonstrated extraordinary dedication and the potential to use education to advance human rights practice and/or scholarship.

The University will offer all of the following for the International Law Scholarship

  • Human Rights Law LLM Fellows will participate in special events with top human rights advocates and academics, and have the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research projects at the Human Rights Institute. Fellows will also receive individualized training in skills and career guidance from Human Rights Institute staff and advisors in practical and academic scholarship.
  • Fellows will also receive special consideration from the Columbia University Human Rights Clinic, a groundbreaking course in which students learn to be strategic, imaginative and critical human rights advocates while working with civil society and communities in pursuit of social justice, while Advancing human rights methodology and scholarship.
  • Fellows are expected to focus on human rights while at Columbia and to be active participants in the law school’s thriving human rights community.

All applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for the 2023-24 International Law Fellowship Program at Columbia Law School

  • In order to qualify for Columbia Law School’s LLM in Human Rights. Scholarship, candidates must first meet the entry requirements and be accepted into the program.
  • Candidates must demonstrate an understanding of international human rights issues, as well as a dedication to a career on the subject, both in human rights practice and academia.
  • Candidates from Africa, Asia, and Latin America are especially invited to apply, as well as those who face barriers to leadership and education because of race, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic status, gender, or sexual orientation.
  • Entry requirements for candidates from law schools in other countries include a Bachelor of Laws degree.
  • A degree in a subject other than law is usually not sufficient for admission, even if it is followed by an LLM. Candidates with law degrees obtained by correspondence education or distance learning are not admitted.

The following procedures remain the only feasible way to apply correctly:

  • Second, a short essay of one to two pages outlining the applicant’s scholarship qualities; a complete LL.M. application for admission. Programming via LSAC. Candidates should talk about their current and past work on human rights, their passion and dedication to the profession, their career aspirations and their vision for human rights. Letters of reference discussing the applicant’s previous work and potential as a human rights advocate, scholar and/or practitioner should be submitted with the Human Rights LL.M. thesis. Scholarships section of LSAC’s online application. Two letters of recommendation may be used for the scholarship application if they include the applicant’s work and contribution to human rights.
  • A third letter of recommendation from a professor or human rights practitioner who can comment in depth on the applicant’s commitment, experience, and future plans in the field of human rights can be submitted through the LSAC online application, if one or two letters of recommendation from the LL.M.
  • Program applications do not address those aspects of the applicant’s background and future interests. By giving the selection committee a clear view of your financial situation, you can help it decide how much aid each fellow should receive and increase the number of fellowships it can offer each year.
